Turkish MP Ali Şahin, representing the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), addressed the 38th General Assembly of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO). During his speech, Şahin underscored Turkey’s outreach strategy toward the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region, emphasizing opportunities for collaboration and advocating for international peace.
Conveying greetings from TBMM Speaker Prof. Dr. Numan Kurtulmuş and the Turkish people, Şahin highlighted the rapid strengthening of relations between Turkey and PARLATINO since the signing of the Cooperation Agreement in 2021. He noted that these ties have been further solidified through mutual visits, as well as through events like the “Turkish Month” celebrations marking Turkey’s centenary and PARLATINO’s messages of condolence following the devastating earthquakes in Türkiye in 2023.
Spotlight on Gaza: “The Humanitarian Tragedy Must End”
A key focus of Şahin’s address was the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He described Israel’s attacks as reaching genocidal levels, stating, “Over 43,000 Palestinians, most of them children and women, have lost their lives, while hundreds of thousands have been injured or left disabled. The international community’s silence on this tragedy is deeply troubling.” Şahin reaffirmed Turkey’s unwavering support for Palestine’s right to independence, grounded in the 1967 borders, and called for urgent international action.
Turkey’s Strategy for the LAC Region
Detailing Turkey’s outreach strategy, Şahin highlighted the remarkable growth in Turkish diplomatic presence, expanding from just six embassies two decades ago to 18 embassies and one consulate general today. He noted the substantial increase in trade volume, which has risen from $1 billion to over $14 billion. Şahin also pointed to Turkish Airlines’ expanded flight network in the region and the role of institutions such as Yunus Emre Institutes, the Turkish Maarif Foundation, and TIKA in fostering cultural and educational cooperation.
“Multilateral Solidarity is Essential”
Şahin emphasized the importance of solidarity and multilateral collaboration in addressing global challenges, describing PARLATINO as a crucial platform for dialogue. He reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to deepening its partnership within the PARLATINO family, aspiring to contribute to solutions for shared issues.
Şahin’s speech highlighted Turkey’s dedication to strengthening ties with Latin America while maintaining a firm stance on global issues, reflecting a vision of collaboration and resilience.
